Eric Chelle, who assumed his role as the Super Eagles head coach in January 2025, faces the dual challenge of leading Nigeria through a critical World Cup qualifying campaign and preparing for the prestigious AFCON tournament.

Speaking after the AFCON draw, which placed Nigeria in Group C alongside Tunisia, Uganda, and Tanzania, Chelle emphasized that “there is no little team in the AFCON,” stressing the importance of focus and preparation.
Despite the looming AFCON tournament, Chelle’s primary focus lies on the 2026 World Cup Qualifiers. Nigeria currently sits fifth in their qualification group, making the March fixtures against Rwanda and Zimbabwe crucial. Chelle highlighted the significance of these matches, stating, “We need to win two games in March. Right now, my focus is on the World Cup qualifiers. The AFCON can wait until October.”
